The Major scale forms the foundation of the vast majority of Western music, across many genres. In short, a musical scale is the path of notes we take from one pitch to another, generally (but not always) spanninng an octave, after which they will usually repeat.
Specifically the Major scale can be built using a formula of tones and semitons (called whole-steps and half-steps for our North American friends) from any one pitch to the same pitch an octave above.
